So last night, here on Columbia's campus, my organization put together a cultural show/dinner... It was basically a Diwali celebration, but considering the South Asian Law Students Association is supposed to represent more cultures than just Hindu, we played the PC card... The entire event, although a bitch to try to set up, came off SO successfully. I was one of the MCs for the event (although I might say I was THE MC because my co-hort, Dimple, was quickly getting wasted throughout the night. She was hilarious... and people in the audience were like, damn, I wanna have what SHE'S having...). Palak, Anuja and Shilpa totally did me the biggest favor and performed a dance to start off the entire event, and they were fantastic and I love them so buy them a drink the next time you see them. By the end, people I think were getting antsy because they were falling into food coma, but I think we got a really great response at the end, people got their money's worth, and we actually sold out... Then, of course, there was the afterparty. Sam, being THE MAN that he is, totally hooked it up at Joe's Pub. It's so funny, I tell him this all the time, every time I want to "throw a party," I call him and say, "Hi Sam, where can I have a party on such and such night?" and he replies with such and such place and then that's the end of it. But then all these people come and they stand in a big line and someone tells me that they're outside, so I go outside to pick them out of the crowd and tell Sam that they were at the show, and then Sam ushers them in, and then they spend all night thinking that I'm the king of NYC nightlife because I "hooked 'em up." No, I actually just pointed you out because you weren't trying so hard to get to the front, and my friend happens to be really nice, so you got in... but I'm not fighting their impressions... Anyway, so now I'm awake and ready to start a new day, LOVING the fact that I don't need to deal with another show anytime soon, but on a high from the turnout of last night... Thanks to everyone who came! Thanks to everyone who thought about coming but just couldn't! Thanks to everyone who had no intention of coming to the show, but thought, "aw, that's nice," when they saw my mass e-mails. Thanks to... okay, that's enough.

So, what's the proper procedure for this sort of thing?

You meet a girl or guy at a party. There's talk between you and this girl/guy. You know that a good friend of yours is interested in this girl/guy, that interest has been noted, but this girl/guy doesn't return that interest. Now this girl or guy wants to start something with you. Like, now.

Etiquette? What to do?

DDT's are taking over the world and I love it.

I mean, the large groups we often find ourselves in. The night always ends with DDT.
The one-on-one conversations that we sometimes plan. Chockful of DDT.
People are bored at work and in class. They go on-line. e-DDT.

I think that a lot of times, people don't feel comfortable talking about certain issues unless a similar issue has been brought up by someone else... kind of like a gauge for measuring the maximum level of opening up. Ever since DDT has become standard practice, I love that people in general feel as though they have less to hide. Maybe it's not even "less to hide," but maybe people realize how much more of themselves they are now able to share.

It's nice.
